Thanks all, still smiling about the time, plan was to go off quick and hang on, although mile 1 at 6:20 was perhaps a tad ambitious. the remaining 5 miles were all fairly even paced though, 2 stops to take on water added a few seconds but didnt cause any real damage to time.

Lol ' 'a tad ambitious'. I suggest that just possibly a more conservative first mile may have seen you smash the 42 minute mark, still a cracking time though, I'll be pleased with that 2 weeks tomorrow...

Good luck to DG and MR74 for your 10k's at the weekend.
Unfortunately for me doesn't look like my 10k next week will be a sub 42 if tonights 5k is a yardstick, only managed 21.11 which was a tidy PB but not as good as I had hoped for, especially as run the same route 35 seconds faster by myself in training only 3 weeks back. The howling gale coming in off Gower estuary may have contrtibuted a little though....

TT, the wind would have made a huge difference! I'd guess with still conditions you'd be easily sub-20:30

I think on a good day I have sub 20 in me at the moment, I guess I will have to try again at start of July...

Sub-20 is an elusive beast, instead of the usual route by maximising the VO2 I got there via maximising fat burning after the Highland Fling.
