Doesn’t matter what the time is ww we can all still learn some new ideas. Yes to super shoes and I’ve tired p&d and jack Daniel’s both with similar results. Last year I did a combo of the 2 which seemed to work. Getting a coach is the main thing I haven’t tried and I’m too tight to pay for one 😂 plus giving control to someone I don’t know would be tough. Long runs are normally 22 miles and I try to do at least 10 in a block, some with marathon pace in. I’m doing less easy running now than I used to. But still do some. Normal routine is recovery 6 on Monday, intervals Tuesday, mlr Wednesday (easy), recovery 6 Thursday, tempo Friday (10+ miles), recovery Saturday, long runs maybe Sunday. Near the end I’ll be around 90-100 miles a week when I start doubling up on the recovery days. I’ve been reading an old Paula Radcliffe book ‘my story so far’ it doesn’t go into much detail on her training but it was interesting to see she would run for her goal time in long runs and cover 24 miles. That sounds like a hard long run to me but maybe something to consider. |

Reading what you do in training is so impressive it makes me think there's not much room for improvement.

Chris, your structure is pretty much same as mine. I guess Paula could take those sessions on as it was her job and she had all the recovery time she needed. I tend to peak at 23m and run 3 hours. I think a coach would be your best shout for sure. |

There's always room for improvement, most folks are doing what they like to do rather than what they need to do. I'm with DT, get yourself a coach for a couple of years, folks spend lots of money on shoes, entries, travel etc, giving control to them gives you accountability and gets you doing what you need to do. If you still don't want to do that, then consider a change up such as a 5k and 10k block for 3 months, through a HM block into a marathon. Further to that look for the small gains, diet, S and C, mobility, drills, sleep, regular massage. |

Might be worth looking at some of the Renato Canova's thoughts on marathon as maybe quality is the next step for you as per what you alluded to with Paula Radcliffe. runningwritings.com |

AG amateurs with work and family to juggle alongside running shouldn't consider training like pro runners imo.

Doesn't mean you can't learn from them and at 90-100 miles a week probably means there's some scope for looking at quality.

It depends if I want to be single again :D a 4 month old and a 3 year old makes it difficult to have an easy recovery after a long run. The first thing I get when coming through the door is daddy can you play with me. Makes me jealous when I hear people have a nap after their long runs and sessions. The Canova article is interesting, I like the idea of doing something new. On reflection I don't really do hill work (its pretty flat around here) so maybe thats something to add in for a bit of strength. I'm not sure how to even go about getting a decent coach, I don't have much trust in the idea of online coaches |

Chris, yes recovery is difficult in those circumstances for sure. My kids are 11 and 14 now so whilst I don't have a free reign, it is much easier to get some down time. My coach is very much into hill work, which isn't something I've done much of before. O just run undulating routes which to me was sufficient. There's more and more regular hill biased sessions these days though. The accountability is what I really needed as I train alone and was dodging any session that went harder than mara pace. However I do like not having to think about what I fancy/like to do and just do what the schedule says. Tbh, you go on the Facebook sub 3 page and say you're looking for recommendations you'll get plenty and plenty of DMS. There's more to it than just a bloke churning out schedules that you get by e mail once a month. |
