You’ve definitely got a mara PB in you Brunski, other than that virtual one you’ve never had a really good run IIRC.

Yeah, reckon that's one of my best 3.

The other 2 are Rome marathon in knackered out (retired) running shoes, which was a pretty well judged effort and I'm pretty pleased with Boston lincs this year in horrid conditions.

Exactly why I wouldn't go to a coach TR. As I say I know plenty of guys willing to make the switch who have improved significantly. Just not for me.
Hope those knackered trainers aren't going to feature in any future marathons Brunski 😉

Interesting reading all the ages people achieved their PBs. I got most of mine 2021/22 in my mid 40s. Had a few set backs in 2023 and not really trying for PBs in 2024 (trying several ultras this year).
A mate in my club, that likes his stats, says getting PBs is not really an.age thing, more that 'most' folk have 5 or 6 years of 'proper' training to get their half/marathon PBs, and doesn't really matter at what age you start.

If you didn't do a lot of dedicated focused training in your 30s or 40s, you would probably get all your PBs in your 50s, and probably none in your 60s.

Same if you did most in your 'proper' training throughout all your 30s, you would be unlikely to get any PBs in your 40s.

I agree with that @damo_HAC, the number of years is the only question really. You clearly have more years when you're younger though (maybe not necessarily running PBs but certainly staying close to peak). At some point the rate of improvement from training (or in training) will stop outstripping the decline from ageing unfortunately. Some pros are showing you can keep going near your peak for longer though. It's helpful that endurance declines slower/ later than speed.

Yes I remember this being discussed somewhere (3:15 thread?) and I think I recall an analysis posted that showed most runners were PBing for about 5-7 years (I think) regardless of age. It certainly seems reasonable to me.

Yes - I'm from the 3:15 thread. Race pbs at 5k, 10k, half marathon (10 mile during) and marathon (20 mile during) since my 50th birthday last august.

Running since 2006 but only the last year or so following proper training plans.

I guess everyone gets the same development period but if that period starts at 33 as opposed 53 the level that can be attained should be higher.

The definition of training properly is relevant also. I followed a p and d mara schedule in 2014 for a marathon and run with structure since then. However I started with a coach in late 2018 and things escalated from there. Following some big gains between 2020 and 2022 progress has slowed since which puts me at nearly 6 years of coached training, however I consider my training 4 years prior was also proper training. I went from 3 18 to 2 59 with it. Perhaps it wasn't though?

'Proper' training is going to be very hard to define. To elites, us 3hrs ish marathon runners are just scratching the surface of proper training, but to folk for who a parkrun will be the pinnacle of their running career, we probably seem like super serious athletes.

Proper, for me, is running 5 or 6 days a week, with dedicated speedwork and paced sessions included.
