Hi, I am currently training for the Ealing Half which is about 8 weeks away. I am following a slightly adapted version of the Hal Higdon Intermediate programme. On most weeks it calls for two fairly short easy runs and a speed work session tuesday to thursday. Is it important to run the easy runs on separate days or is it just as good to cover the same mileage across two runs - a longer easy run and a speed work session?

Thanks

Nick

It's not clear, but are you proposing doing two sessions in one day? If so, the only impact I can see is whether you are sufficiently recovered to do both sessions well.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I just mean running 7 miles on one day, rather than 3 miles on Tuesday and 4 on the Thursday. This is more convenient for me but I wanted to know if it is less effective training wise or the number of miles per week is more important then the number of sessions.

No difference, with the massive caveat of ensuring you are fresh for the speed session to get full benefit from it.

Depends if 7 miles recovery is too much for you, and it should be done at true recovery pace.

The stress (training effect) on your system is different I suppose - do you then do speed work on the Wednesday? I'm not an expert on HH and the purpose of each session, so I'd still say it's a matter of recovery to complete the sessions well - either 7 easy then speedwork, or vice versa.

Thanks for the feedback. Seems a quiet thread right now. To be honest I haven't done any speed work (save the odd parkrun) but the mileage I have done has been similar to 2011 when I did 1hr 35 at Macclesfield half. I also did a 22m12 parkrun at the weekend which is quicker than my parkrun from this time two years ago. So right now hoping to keep up the mileage (only about 25 miles a week) and assuming it all goes to plan I will be aiming for 1hr 35 at Ealing in a months time.

Little Stoker
Ive got Glen Clova Half in 10 weeks. Know I'll need to threaten 1.40 if i'm gonna beat my 2 pain in the arse 50yo mates who are getting too bloody quick, having only been running about 2 years?£$%&*!

These last 2 weeks, after a lazy month, Ive been goin to the gym, n doing 7 miles on the treadmill at 8 min mile pace, then onto the exercise bike, n doing about 29km in a very sweaty hour. I plan on continuing this with increases every visit for the next couple of weeks, then I'll get outside n do some hilly running. Just fancied a new approach, as I cant afford a bicycle at the moment n so couldnt finish my run then get on my real bike.

I know its not the same as running, and believe me, I'll have done plenty 13 milers before race day.

Indeed, i watch this thread, but i'd be lucky to run 13 miles at the moment let alone in 1:40, keep up the good work everyone.

2 weeks to go. Peak mileage week just gone, 10 miles yesterday and 11 today. Bit of a taper now and still looking good for 1hr 35min.
