Slow cooker recipes often start with frying onions etc on the hob, and I can't be bothered doing that in the morning if I want the slow cooker on. Instead, slice the top and base off an onion but do not peel it. Put in a microwaveable dish, drizzle it with a little oil, cover and into the microwave for 4-5 mins. Peel when cool enough and chop up as usual. I did an excellent bean and chorizo stew earlier this week -- the chorizo got sliced and spent a couple of minutes in the microwave as well. Worked a treat.
