His body position just looks like that nervous stiff one that my 79yo dad adopts! Always good to see an elite sportsman *not* being naturally good at everything! Tignes booked for us in April; replacing the 2020 trip that we should have done before "stuff" happened. My dad isn't coming though, which is a shame; at 79 he is a bit fearful of the slushy spring snow, which I can understand. Think he's done his last skiiing holiday, sadly. |

Age is a thing, pretty good to have got late into his seventies skiing with us, especially as he only started in his late fifties.

I thought Alex Dowsett did pretty well for a first day. All the usual beginner mistakes, the shoulder swinging round was the classic I spotted. That’s impressive Larkim, learning to ski so late. But it is a challenging sport even if you’re young and fit! |

Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
Had a lovely time yesterday. Only out for 1.5 hours, and only did 7 short runs, but was great to "test out" my kit. I've got the touring skis, so even though only bottom lifts were open, I was able to climb a little higher, then come down a slope that no one had been on! Fab! My skiing is pretty lousy, even though I've been doing it for 35 years! Never had a lesson, that might be it! I'll tell you how bad it is - on one of the runs I had my boots in walking mode trying to do a downhill. I wondered why my control seemed to be even worse than usual. Improved quite dramatically on next run when I'd actually done my boots up! ![]() ![]() Beautiful conditions - saw a mountain hare (white), ptarmigan (pretty common up there, but cool), deer (obviously), a hovering bird of prey (probably kestrel?) and most excitingly, a pair of soaring birds of prey that I don't think were buzzards - white under the wings, might have been golden eagles? ![]() |

57.5 Days of Xmas
Excellent skiing at the moment in the Alps (at least at high resorts). Lots of new snow but tricky visibility today. I ski like a runner. Strong legs and fitness making up for limited technique. |

My annual offer to anyone who finds themselves in the Chamonix valley this season and who is unfamiliar with the trails in winter here, but fancies a run: bring your running kit and allow me the pleasure of showing you some lovely routes😁
