Enjoyable piece in The Grauniad today: theguardian.com

I've been rootling around the site of one of the companies namechecked: pure-trails.com

The thought of a trail running holiday in Mallorca or further afield in places like the Azores, Albania, or even Kyrgyzstan is appealing. Although costly but why not treat myself sometime.

I'm wondering what other companies and what other similar offers are out there, and if anyone has any suggestions, recommendations?

In all honesty I'll probably go no further than ruminating over a pint or two down the local (where the barman used to own a running events company as a sideline). But a little voice in my head is saying why not. Start with something modest in this country, and see how it goes .... ?

I went on a couple of guided runs with Go Trail Madeira. I didn't book a holiday with them just signed up for a couple of runs while I was there on holiday with my wife. The other participants were on a holiday package which included yoga sessions in the afternoon. Madeira is a great place to run.

The only one I know of is InnTravel. They do self guided walking and cycling holidays, but no reason why you couldn't run them.
My mate works for them and has been to Greece, Madeira, Portugal and Sicily - that I know of.

Another couple of friends did a city tour while in Barcelona, they ran about 10km with the tour guide who would stop and talk about stuff every so often. Said they really enjoyed it.

I can easily recommend tracks-and-trails.com My SO and I have had trail-running holidays in the Jura mountains, round Mont Blanc and the Dolomites, guided personally by the co-owner, Julia, who is based in the Peak District and in Chamonix. The company also offers other holidays, such as xc-skiing, snowshoeing, hiking. The staff are qualified mountain guides when necessary.

If you fancy something low key and very personalised I can recommend Tom and his set-up in Spain. I've done around half a dozen trips out there in the last 8 or 9 years. Always a small friendly group with guided runs customised to folks ability and how they're feeling. Always very relaxed and enjoyable. You'll eat well too. It's a great place to go Feb/Mar time when you're craving some warmth without it being stupidly hot.

Another low-key way to do it is book a walking holiday that does baggage transport and run (or run-walk) instead of hike the arranged sections. It means that you get more time to eat the B&B breakfast, which is always more plentiful than a hotel, and the worst that happens is you arrive at the next overnight earlier than expected. You get more time to have a planned dawdle at sights along the way, too.

Companies we have used for this include Contours Holidays, Lets Go Walking!, Drover Holidays, Macs Adventure, Budget Walking and Easyways, and outside the Uk Exodus Travels, The Enlightened Traveller. Routes we have done this on include West Highland Way, Offa's Dyke, SW Coast Path, Wales CP, Hadrian's Wall, St. Cuthberts, St Oswalds, Stevenson Trail (France), Cumbria Way, C2C. Let me know if you want any GPS tracks for these.

A club pal has just done a trail race in Nepal. Looked amazing!

Mind you, 4,200m altitude would be lung busting! :-) G

Thank you all. I shall be following up. I like the idea of booking a supported walking holiday, hadn't thought of that.
