That's good to know. Research (by which I mean Google) seems to be saying that Feb & March are the best times to be there.

I learned to ski in Scotland. It was a bit rough. But that was in 1979.

I don’t believe it’s reliable. I think it’s more a ‘see what the snow is like this weekend’ sort of place. Of course if it snows a lot then you can’t get there...

When it’s good, it’s very very good. But when it’s bad........

4 types of snow in Scotland: white (rare), grey (slippy), brown (heathery) and black (rocky). :)

As the others have said, it can be a bit mixed. Often difficult to access the 'resorts' when it snows and by the time the road's cleared so is the mountain.

Old hands in the mountaineering club have long held that the best skiing in Scotland is a long way from the developed areas. As such, back-country or ski-mountaineering is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment but you need to be a bit good, a bit patient and a bit determined to get the most from it.

Some of my best ever skiing days have been in Scotland, but it’s very unpredictable and I wouldn’t come here to ski holiday without being prepared to walk or climb instead. Hence we always take at least a week in mainland Europe every year.

Thanks for your responses all. Okay, I think I won't suggest it to him but will keep a watching brief on the weather and snow conditions during his winter break.

Had a ski instructor in Tignes one year who was a Tignes local - when asked where the best skiing in the world was he replied "Scotland". Heavily caveated by the fact that it had to be perfect weather to create it, but that was his genuine answer!

They do say that with the right conditions there is nowhere better in the world to ski than Scotland. I have heard many people say that.

Best place I have ever skied is Hokkaido, Japan. Long way to go but extraordinary. The resort is on the slopes of a volcano.

A good friend of mine lives in Oz so meeting in the middle for a ski trip was either Whistler or Japan.

I was really disappointed with Whistler.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a long way from being shit but it definitely didn’t live up to its billing. I even preferred Tremblant (although that was probably as much to do with the company (& the micro-brewery) as anything else! ;)

OK I've held off long enough.

If you're heading on a board or the planks, where are you off to?...
