Rob - that's a fairly hefty entry fee without the opportunity to transfer or defer, plus as a new event probably a lot of unknown details as yet.

I'm so used to the windy weather that 45mph is OK for me 🤣

Keith - stay safe, can you work from home today?

Heavy rain and 50-60mph winds when I got up today, but the wind was due to drop to below 50mph which it did and I only had to delay my run by 10 minutes. Was still raining heavily but that eased and then stopped, lovely and mild 11 degrees. Did a lap of the industrial estate, which was flooded and had no choice but to run through and got very wet feet. Then onto my favoured little housing estate, which as fairly new has no drainage problems and no flooding. Did 6 laps then headed home and more flooding, didn't want to get my feet wet again as they were comfortably damp but warm. Usually I can get past that bit of flooding but today it was right up the the wall. Stopped my Garmin and used the pelican crossing only to find the pavement on the other side of the road was also flooded. Waited 5 minutes for a gap in the traffic and then ran using the road, it's busy main road. Apart from all that I had a good run 7+ miles.

Gym later, legs/glutes today.

In an attempt to dial in MP a bit, and as it was reasonable conditions with not too much wind, I decided to do a session of sorts on the flat.

3x2-miles, with 1 mile recovery in between. With getting down to the front, and running back, it was 11 miles in total.

I got the Vaporflys out, which I guess signifies some level of intent. I don’t remember wearing them since Seville 2022…..!

I’d set the watch up with the workout and told it a pace band of 7:50-8:10, with 8:00 being hoped for MP. Occasionally it was prompting me to slow down, but generally I was in that band, with the efforts and recoveries below:
7:50/7:59 (HR 148)
8:30

7:49/7:53 (157)
8:23

7:53/7:48 (160)
8:20

Odd one as the efforts were clearly too fast, as I can see HR was rising with each effort. But the recoveries, although probably too quick, felt incredibly, incredibly easy and almost ploddy.

Seeing that HR though, I am wondering if this 8min/mile goal is too ambitious. I think I may try and do a similar session next week but really try nail it at 8min/mile rather than going those few seconds quicker, as I do think they make a difference, and then see how the HR is. And if it’s still going up quite a bit, I’ll need to rein it in I think.

In other news, I’ve had this back about my shoulder.

I have seen the results of your recent shoulder X ray. It highlights a rotator cuff arthritis and some calcific tendonitis.
You are in the process of referral to NHS physio therapy. They can review for treatment plan and I believe we discussed potential steroid injection therapy may be beneficial for this.

Big G - good session. Very promising that you dusted off the Vaporflys too.

Doing MP in cold blood is very different to race day. Next week's session might give you the answers you're looking for.

I suppose not a surprise re the shoulder. Is this the same one that was injured for a long time?

Shades, this is the left shoulder. Previously I had issues in my right shoulder, and did end up having a steroid injection in that as well. Don’t remember them mentioning arthritis last time though.

Big G - well I suppose any exercises you're given can be done on the other shoulder too to help maintain full mobility.

I see we've now got a weather warning for snow and ice for tonight/early morning. I think the snow is for the moors here. 🥶

I see EA have set up an individual EA membership, IMHO a bit daft and not at all helpful for the future of running clubs.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
