Big G - good to hear you're putting together a list of events for next year. With your long suffering time with PF and my catalogue of injuries and mishaps, the list is only a shadow of its former self.

As I too didn't run this morning I had a bit of time on my hands and entered a marathon and booked a hotel room...just like the old days 🙃

Entered the Great Welsh, just hoping it won't be too cold for me, but as we have so few road marathons now I can't be too fussy.

Shades-I looked at Great Welsh, but after Fleetwood half I'm a little scarred for seafront races.I am still trying to figure out my spring plans, off for best part of a week from Friday so will tie them down then hopefully.

Ian - it's not that sort of seafront race. It's a huge area of tarmac cycle paths that twists and turns but it's on a peninsula with a long stretch of sand to the sea. So it's exposed in a different sort of way than a town promenade.

But when it's wet and windy it's a tough course in places.

Shades, seems crazy that my 2 fastest times this year has been up and down that blasted path in Exmouth! I hadn’t realised until I checked the list, but how times have changed!

Looking through that list, I really struggled in Madeira and NYC. Tokyo my foot was playing up a fair bit in general, Riga was hot and the foot not great either. But I am really hoping I’m on for better things, with the foot, next year. We shall see.

I was talking with my mate the other day and I still have hopes of getting back down under 3:30 and 3:15. And who knows maybe qualifying for Boston again. I’ve not given up hope just yet!

Keith - I'm sure you have the qualifying time for Comrades but it's having the confidence and conviction that you could finish within the strict time limit.

Big G - I think you can certainly PB again and get your Boston qualifying time. You need a good long spell of consistent training.

You have good reasons why your non Exmouth events weren't your season's best times. Mostly very limited training due to your PF.

Shades-Ok that looks a bit better, will add it back to the possibles to discuss next week.
Big G-I still hold hopes of getting faster again.I forgot I got 3:19 at Manchester and was feeling really confident then had the fall and that knocked a lot out of me,even in my head,I was really nervous again this week when I ran in the dark,so slow as I was being extra careful.

Ian - I think Steve is doing Great Welsh. In good conditions it is a fast course, I've run it 5 times and 3 of those at good times for me including my 10th fastest marathon 7 years after my last marathon PB. The other two, one was in bad weather and in 2023 when I had knee problems for the last 10 miles.

It doesn't take much to give us a what can become a major setback for quite a long time, a fall, injury etc.

5 miles this morning, RHR back to normal so thankfully yesterday was just a blip.

About This Thread

Maintained by Shades
Back in December 2005 I started a thread on Runner's World offering a marathon training plan on 3 runs a week. I had my own running club at the time (Womens Running Network) and I had successfully trialled the training plan when I took a group of girls to Dublin to run their first marathon.

Over the years the thread has evolved into a chat thread, with a bit of training advice, race reports, for predominantly marathon runners.
