And I ain't dispute that DT but, my point is England have known about the Boks forwards since forever and haven't worked out a way of neutralising them. GM props I reckon are the future

Genetically modified props fed on genetically modified crops. It’s definitely something worth exploring.

Totally agree. If England had got over the line they would have completely deserved to be in the final. They had the perfect strategy to win a game of rugby and the stars aligned to make it work and it’s probably fair to at that strategy was comfortably in Steve Borthwick’s wheelhouse. As has been said by more informed commentators than me, the task now is to develop a way of playing that will work in other situations. The Six Nations is going to be interesting

SA play to their strengths, but it's not the type of rugby that is going to attract a new audience. It seems harsh to effectively lose a game because your 17stone prop goes down on his knee because he can't compete with a 20stone prop. It's hardly foul play in the same sense that diving over a ruck or a high tackle is - yet they receive the same punishment. I'd like to see scrum penalties reduced to free kicks. The offensive team can choose to run, scrum again, or kick for territory - but I don't think they should be allowed to kick for goal. Throw into the mix the fact that a lot of scrums are vestiges of the dark arts - refs can be a bit subjective in how they see some of the offences playing out. The obvious counter to the SA front row is for smaller opposition front rows to be replaced with ever bigger ones. Not something I think is good for the game. |

My boss played rugby at quite a good level and we were discussing the dark arts yesterday. There's all kinds of tricks going on aside of brute force and shear presence. An issue for England one of the commentators picked up on was persistent penalties can lead to a yellow card hence more pressure on a struggling prop. I thought England did brilliantly

I reckon the rules need a change to make it a more entertaining watch. I know there is a lot of skill in rucking, mauling and scrummaging, and I can appreciate that side of the game, but wouldn't we all like to see more running rugby and fewer games decided by penalties and the dark arts?

I agree - I think there's a difference in foul play. Players can choose (or at least not think..): - to dive over a ruck to slow down the clear out, or - to not come in from the back, or - to tackle too high etc But when it comes to scrum penalties, it's often more down to brute strength forcing the opposition to commit an offence. The players don't necessarily choose to drop their shoulder / knee but they're forced into it. Then I think a penalty is a harsh result. |

How about you can only score points from a try or a drop goal. Get rid of conversions and award 7 points for a try. Kicking penalties eliminated and instead the team fouled against get the ball in hand (maybe 10 yards forward from where the offense was committed, unless within 10 yards when the pay resumes where it is (unless a penalty try is appropriate)). The offending team have to retreat 10 yards, or as far as the try line where applicable. You can't drop-kick straight from the penalty, the ball either has to be run or passed. Maybe reduce the number of players on each team to 13 to increase space.

Maybe reduce the number of players on each team to 13 to increase space. Theres 's a game like that already - and it has virtually uncontested scrums... |
