Tries were increased to 5 points to encourage teams to not just kick every penalty but if the difference is too much you risk more infringements rather than fewer.

I played union at school (to a fairly low average ability, but it was forced for at least 4 or 5 years) but watched league when the Bulls were in their prime. I was forever getting confused by which rule was in which sport.
