TRO Saracen
I'd disagree Wriggler. Lancaster';s muddle thinking and late changes in gameplan (or did he even have a gameplan?) did not help. Bet the Welsh came were happy when they saw that team sheet; they would have known that Cardiff 2013 was still on our minds, despite the 2 wins since.

However, the MAIN problem was our complete inability to be disciplined and to play the ref well.

We gave away the first pen after 25 seconds which gave Wales posession and territory. Ball was back in play for about another 30 seconds, and we coughed up a second pen for the first 3 pointer. Gets Wales up and running. Another 3 pointer just before HT gives them a boost. Built 10 point leads 3 times in the game, and gave 3 points straight back from the kick off after we scored every time. We were giving away pens when not in real danger.

They hung in there, stayed in touch becuase of it. When that happens and they're still within a score as the game enters the final qtr, they start thinking 'we can win this' and we start tightening up and stop playing. Lancasters subs were stupid, as was the decision to go for the lineout, compounded by the double stupidity of throwing to the front where Wales simply pushed us 2 metres sideways into touch. I felt the end coming way before Lancaster's bone headed preplanned subs by numbers, however.

Oh and Barritt. FFS. Shit in the warm up games, shit against Fiji and shit awful against Wales.

FE saying his estimation of England went up when we kicked for the corner sums it up - I think the entire Welsh team's estimation of us went up - they were high fiving and fist pumping in delight when they saw Ford going for the corner.

We should check them out of their glided paradise at Pennyhill Park with all its luxuries and facilities. Room them 2 per room at a Travelodge and train on a muddy field with nothing but tackle bags. We need to be mean, ferocious and relentless next Saturday to have a sliver of a chance. Regime is too happy clappy and on message. Some mates of mine who know far about the game than I do have been calling this out for 2 years. Need to get some anger, and nastiness out by 8pm Saturday, or we'll be playing Uruguay for a dead rubber.

Just to go on the record, i think, given the poor Welsh set pieces, and our need to win the game i was entirely happy with the kick to touch at the end, because i absolutely thought we would win the line out and score a try and win the game.

I was disappointed to see a "safe" short line out, which obviously had two downsides, and we were very efficiently shoved into touch, before we could recycle the ball.

The kick was tough and there were no guarantees he was going to get it.

I applaud the positive mindset to go for the win.

I can also see TRO's point, where they have become a bunch of molly coddled pussies, and need to HTFU before we get a proper mauling.

ah-ha, just like the footballers eh? Get paid too much, live in a diffeent world, etc, etc. It was and is nothing to do with money or status, it is to do with having the where with all to think throuhg something. A draw would have been better than a loss.

I fail to see what is not positive about making sure you get a draw and fight on, it is a professional game, you get what you can.

The rugby community might not like it, but it is results driven business, not an entertainment.

There was no guarantee they would kick the 3pts, but it was a better chance than getting a try from a line out. We could have got possession back and still scored again.
minimal gains as they say.

Rugby = football = professional game = results

it does, it will for ever more

Personally, I think its the right decision as I don't think it was intentional, just clumsy and a bit dangerous to go for a grubber kick with a bloke on the floor.

As Nelly said last page, and I've said before, only the Burgess/Ford sub could possibly be considered a relevant decision in the result, and I think that's stretching it. I'm going to 'treat' myself to watching the game again tonight, I'll see if I feel any differently then.

TRO - I hope you feel better for that rant about molly-coddled softies. It's bollocks, though. We won the World Cup in 03 from such a 'luxury' base, with Woodward a firm believer in all the marginal gains that in theory should accrue. You're right in the sense that we're not, and haven't been for a while, nasty enough or streetwise enough. But that is character, not facilities. *That's* (IMHO) the reason Burgess is in this squad - because he has some of that dog in him. One or two others do, but not enough.

Well done Wales too, I s'pose :-)

There's a great quote about Redgrave and Pinsent, during one of the Olympics - Redgrave leant over to Pinsent just before the start of the race and said "let's spoil some people's dreams"

I think subs are a part of the game, and you have to imagine that they are also part of the plan. It was only last week that the subs came on and helped take the game away from Fiji, if I remember right.

Mykey - if a warning is equivalent to a Yellow Card, as indicated in the BBC article, then personally I think even that punishment is harsh on Wood. IMO, as the ball is rolling around on the floor and clearly nobody has their hands anywhere near it when he tries to kick it, then he is perfectly entitled to try to do so.
