So you need to go from 4.43 metres per second up to 4.69 metres per second. Or 26cm per second.

Would platform shoes help?

I don't think about it as speed in much the same way runners don't think in MPH.

It's basically the difference between 1:52.9 per 500m average pace and 1:45 and some change in December, ideally.

And joking aside platform shoes are no help at all. You really want the thinnest soles you can get to avoid anything that's going to compress when you push against the footrest (stretcher in rowing language) and absorb any of the power you're producing. Some people actually row in just their socks but I got blisters when I tried that!

26cm per second (or a bit more than an extra metre every 4 seconds) feels like a lot all of a sudden!

Funny enough I have rejoined my running club this year and said I will run some track.

Ironically my comeback is cross country on the 8th , first race XC for 2 years. Haven't raced on the track since 3 k in May 2023

My last come back started in 2020 and ended in Feb 2023 ( That was after an a 10 year gap)

Maybe some exfoliation for the soles of your feet then, for a few extra millimetres :-)

Almost coincidentally, my 12 month mile PB is 7:41 - I wonder how I feel about having to take 30 seconds off that. But in my case, I've not done a great deal of speedwork for a very long time - whereas it sounds like you've been honing your time for a while. I'll have a sub-quest alongside the cricket, to get my mile time inside your rowing time :-)

@Gobi I hope you have fun with it :-)

Actually due to injuries (mainly back issues) I'm pretty much just rebuilding the base at the moment. Given that the race is 2k/ about 7 minutes it might seem odd but my session tonight is 2 x 18 minutes at Tempo pace (rowing call that UT1) which for me is somewhere around 2:05/500m, and I'll do maybe 12km in total including warm up and down.

I reckon you could drop a good chunk off that mile time with a bit of focus on it, @fetcheveryone , barring injuries which were always my problem with trying to run fast regularly.

What prompted the return to running again @Gobi ? Is it because you don't have enough to do and don't like being bored? ;-)

Have you planned a sporting comeback this year? Or got yourself involved in something outside of the normal remit of our run/swim/bike/walk universe?

Share your hopes, dreams and crushing realities here :-)

Me, I'm constantly hitting refresh on the social media accounts of Olney Town Cricket Club, hoping that their nets will start soon. I am hoping to play club cricket again after a hiatus of about 22 years. I know of at least one other Fetchie planning a similar journey (albeit with ...
