If anyone is interested I put the route into MapMyRun for last year. These can be downloaded into a Garmin (or three) and make navigation a piece of cake. There are a couple of points to note if you use these (i) the sections don't start and end at the checkpoints because I didn't know where they were then (ii) there is one bit where the clearly signposted path runs about 100m parallel to where the Garmin (ie the Harveys map I plotted it from) said it should. If in doubt follow the signs!

the other thing to be aware of is that each time you choose a new route segment it stops your garmin and you have to restart.

Although whether a few seconds makes much difference over 85 miles is debatable :)

Good point. I did forget to restart the timer a few times last year. Not that hard to work out how many hours you have been going for though! :-)

I'm also running this race, having not even made it to the start line last year due to injury.
I went to recce the last 10miles of the route this morning (out and back), I got very lost. But I'm not the best at navigation.

Must get around to ordering the map - Harvey's, no? I assume I can get it online. Is it just the one version, called something obvious like 'The Ridgeway Map', or will there be choices to confuse me?

I ordered this one yesterday:

amazon.co.uk

But I know nothing, so you should probably wait for someone who's actually used one of them to reply really...

I'll be curious to see how the 1:40000 Harveys compares to the 1:25000 OS maps I'm used to.

That's the one Anne.

I've never used OS maps, but have used harveys maps for the ridgeway, the south downs way and the west highland way.

They are very good, and have lots of useful information on, but are specific to the route ms are strip maps, so if you went way off course, they may not be of much help.

The ridgeway is very well marked though, and although I usually carry a map, I've only ever referred to it a couple of times for navigational purposes.
