Right Fetchland. Advice please.
I've got a lovely Gore Bikewear jacket that I've had for a couple of years and I love, but it doesn't appear to be as waterproof as it once was. It has been very gently washed in a small amount of detergent to keep it clean every so often. Question is, do I need to reproof it with something? I always thought that the clever thing with Goretex was in its inherent design/fabric construction rather than any applied repellent.
Am i right or do I need to do something before I subject it to the best Wales can throw at it this weekend?

You can buy stuff you wash in it works well, needs to be heat activated, so I found my self blow-drying my Rohan Mac before a trip to Northern Ireland this spring.

CStar, have a look at Nikwax.
I have used Nikwax a few times over the years & it does what it says on the tin. I have used it on my cycling jacket, running jacket & walking jackets. I have always purchased the product that goes in the washing machine.
All the info is on their website.
Hope this helps.

Grangers of Nixwax wash-in world well. You stick it in the washing machine with your stuff.
It is not really re-proofing the gore-tex though. You're right that the material is inherently waterproof. These treatments refresh the DWR (durable water repellent) coating on the outside that makes the rain bead on the surface and run off. Without the DWR, the rain starts to soak into the outer layer of the garment, but that is ok as the waterproof layer is the middle layer of the garment. (they often have 3 layers, a shiny outer, waterproof layer then a liner).
So, the DWR makes it more pleasant as the outer layer soaks up less water but doesn't actually change the waterproofness.
So.. once you get a hole in the middle layer the reproofing does nothing.
I wash my stuff in the Nikwax treatment about once a year
