Old Croc
thanks guys. We do recognise we have a long way to go but are very limited on budget - a club event without a big sponsor (many thanks to those who have helped so far). So for example a local biscuit company is giving us boxes of shortbread fingers to pop in the bottle.
As I said it's a small step albeit one that we can take 450 times in one go.

Very welcome to hear of any ideas / alternative for next year - bit late for next weekend I think!

Interesting to read that photo-degrading plastics are contributing to greenhouse gases. I remember reading somewhere that methane gas is supposed to be 10x-20x worst than CO2 in terms of warming effects though lasts shorter in the atmosphere (@10 years):

Not that I race any more but I was always underwhelmed by the contents of a goody bag anyway. A good spread (cakes/soup) and a nice cuppa would appeal to me more. Mind you that has its own potential issues (plates/cutlery). I think using your reusable plastic bottle as a receptacle is a great idea.

Ooh I forgot to say that I received my delivery of shampoo, conditioner and deodorant from heavenly-organics.com yesterday. It's all in powder form which is a bit different. I will report back.

Sounds intriguing. My Lush citrus deodorant bar is a little pungent for my liking...even with my diminished sense of smell, it seems to make my eyes water a little. It does work though!

I tried Lush shampoo and conditioner bars but they were so full of crap that my excema went nuts. I should check their deodorant though.

Deodorant recipe

45g coconut oil (I infuse mine with calendula)
50g Shea butter
13g hemp oil
13g Sweet almond oil
28g beeswax
11g arrowroot
6g kaolin clay
1tbsp bicarbonate of soda
100 drops essential oil - I used tea tree, lavender and litsea.

Melt beeswax, butters and oils together. Stir in powders. Pour into pot stirring briskly until thickened. Cool quickly in fridge.

I’ve been using it for a few months, no one has complained.

Velociraptor
I stopped using deodorant a few years ago after I couldn't find any (either the wee-raptors had been raiding my cupboard or I'll find a secret stash of it somewhere next time I clean the house) and discovered that although I smell, I don't smell any worse without deodorant than with it. Or if I do, nobody's said anything to my face.
