World Champs and Olympics do differ in strategy as they’re country teams, not pro teams where there is a designated leader and team members have roles to help. Also just the one winner, so for someone that has no chance of winning there’s less incentive. See Olympics 2012, U.K. couldn’t bring back the break on their own so nobody else helped as they all knew that Cavendish would win the sprint. Like MM, I find the tactics interesting, and it was great to see several breakaway wins in TDFF, in one case the two leaders were clearly working together all the way, whereas often they start looking at each other and that’s when the peloton catch |

Sometimes the idea of multidisciplinary athletes (for me) undermines the respect I have for the competition. If a cyclist is able to win at cx, road, MTB, track it makes me wonder what the point of the different events really is.

MudMeanderer has covered the tactics. There is big saving sitting in and working hard to just be beaten by those behind doesn't make sense. If you have a strong favourite, getting everyone to work for them to bring it back is a good idea, but once they're spent, more attacks will go off so it's difficult without others co-operating. World champs and Olympics still generally have leaders and helpers in the same way as world tour stage and one day races. Probably unusual to have three leaders as Belgium do today, although Quickstep have done similar in the classics in the past. |

Quite enjoying Ned and Chris talking random stuff while the race is stopped for protesters! It’s been ages, hope they get going soon

At least the weather is good for waiting on the circuit.

This race is bonkers. No advantage to having a big strong team on this circuit. No idea who's going to win. Could be anyone. |

The circuit is bonkers. Surely Pidcock would have been a good rider for it?

Has anybody found any info about what happened with the stoppage? Understandably nothing was forthcoming on the footage
