I’m old enough to remember he wanted to make us a world leader in AI. Unless he just doesn’t want to give away all our secrets.

Any doubters about Musk's almost untouchable power, read this:

The problem is the English have a hard time believing it couldn't happen here. I am living proof, I literally would not exist if it couldn't happen here.

Am I missing the (potentially sinister) point that some of it reminds me of Cummings’ recruitment drive for weirdos and nerds?

That's a scary article and anyone who thinks it couldn't happen here is mad.

This is all going to be the sweetest music to Putin's ears. Just think what kind of access to secure systems within the US government he can get now!

Sadly I don't think that's a poor assessment

Presumably any company that holds sensitive data still has to comply with data laws? Not belittling it at all, but its not open season on private data for Putin exactly.

I'm more concerned about Trump's continued persecution of minorities with the exec order to blanket ban trans women being part of women's sport in educational settings. Obviously strong feelings around this subject but its a damaging way to go about dealing with it.

There's a reason data protection laws throughout Europe (shorthand, GDPR) put restrictions / added requirements on data holdings in the US. It's just not as strong a regime over there.

The trans issues EO is simultaneously appealing to his base, but also pretty much in line with where many sports governing bodies are heading too anyway; the education link in the US I suppose is critical because "college sport" is so much more a key component of their high performance pathways.
