From the Rebank article:

Taxation should distinguish between working farmers and tax-dodging chancers. By all means go after the big estates. But going after working farms struggling to survive is cruel.

Second time Labour have got this wrong, first time was over Winter Fuel Allowance. Both times in principle the tax was good BUT both times the net has been cast too wide, and they're not willing to admit they've caught some smaller family farms in the net, as they did catch some struggling pensioners with minimal savings (I know people personally affected by both and they're not well off). Now they're doubling down. Not a good look.

Really a blanket wealth tax would have been a more sensible idea (although not likely to raise as much as mooted). Here Labour are burning through political capital with people who took a chance on them. 2028-29 will be a reckoning unless they drastically change course.

Council tax needs a radical overhaul (well scrapping and replacing with something more equitable), but there's no immediate obvious alternative. We can argue for Land Value Tax or something similar, but even there, there's upsides and downsides, would take ages to implement, and there's no political capital to be easily gained, hence no party will look at it. It was only ever meant to be a temporary replacement for poll tax.

Whatever they target will have people just on the “wrong” side of the line who will feel hard done by. I also think that the press pick up on these stories and blow them out of proportion. I’m not minimising the impact on individuals, but I do wonder how many individuals really are impacted.

Bottom line on that score Pothunter will be whether people are better off in 2028-29 rather than all the meandering along the way.

Will the protesting farmers be getting 5 years, and refused jury trials?

Thought not

Lenin had the right approach to the kulaks and called them:

"bloodsuckers, vampires, plunderers of the people and profiteers, who fatten themselves during famines"

Who has been refused jury trials? Other than through the mechanisms which are enacted for all potential defendants? (I'm not in favour of the way that the right to protest has been increasingly restricted, to be clear, just wondering whether there were any specific periods where jury trial was actually restricted for specific defendants e.g. during the recent riots etc).

Indeed, and I guess whether the Daily Mail think it or if the proverbial man in the street actually thinks it too.
