@richmac which bit are you saying no to as I don't really understand how what you said is different to what I said? Or are you just saying the to the door bit is different (so it was always fibre just needed extending)? My understanding is BT Openreach is essentially creating the National network and where they have done that, you will have more competition in terms of who to select as your fibre broadband provider. |

Actually re reading your post I should have written correct then trotted out my history lesson. Other companies pay BT to use their exchanges so really the 'choice' is who can charge you the least for the same service |

A quick Google suggests U.K. is ahead in this regard, and for whatever reason take up is also slow in Germany, which again I found surprising. Cash is king in Germany and many people don’t have cards (of any kind), though debit cards are now being accepted much more widely. Higher salaries and cheaper services mean most people have money. |

Broadband is a nightmare if you live slightly off the beaten track (ie Cornwall). In which case Virgin won't go there, our local broadband (Eu junket claiming company who will go spectacularly broke one day) firm can't even lay a fibre line 3 miles up from their national headquarters. And we're waiting on BT Openreach to connect us, 3-4 years after they laid the cable. Privatisation was good you say? Give me Jeremy Corbyn. And our village was a "good example" there are people in hamlets around here who have dialup speeds still and no company interested in connecting them as it's not worth their while. Because that is how the market works. |

The network is separate to the service. But Openreach (network) is currently technically still part of BT (service) although ofcom have tried to keep them separate. Providing rural communities is a technical challenge and is why Virgin etc have, historically, not gone there. |

It's the same with train services. It's why public works better. Otherwise private companies who get hold of the local services as part of their franchise basically neglect them and let them die, as it's not profitable to keep them going. Several Cornish branch line services suffering death by 1000 cuts.

Also I know we’re talking about BT/Virgin, but there is mobile (and satellite) too, which is why I think Corbyn’s idea wasn’t thought through in terms of impact.

I disagree with respect - O2 are generally considered the best mobile network in terms of coverage & reliability. This is because it was built when it was part of BT, before BT was privatised |

No way O2 was built before BT was privatised?!? That was 1984, BT / Cellnet wasn't around then, and certainly not the network that is in place today.

Just after according to Wiki "The company was formed on 7 January 1985[5] as Cellnet, a 60:40 joint venture between BT Group and Securicor. Cellnet was one of the first two mobile networks in the UK, alongside Vodafone." en.wikipedia.org |
