SPR wrote: So the Abbott investigation was concluded in December 2023 and she did the required training in February 2024. x.com That's really interesting. How does that square with both her and the party still suggesting that something is still ongoing? e.g. this tweet from her x.com Assuming the Derbyshire report is correct, there's another layer to this that we don't know about, most likely about future candidature? I could speculate, but I'd likely be wrong!! |

So a pensioner on a state pension of say 13k won't pay tax but a wage earner on the same amount will? Interesting approach to taxation. |

That tweet fits with what Derbyshire reports. Abbott said it's about Starmer which would make sense if the investigation has been completed. Even if it wasn't about Starmer (which seems hard for it not to be), it would make sense for Abbott to feel like that.

According to my OH the oil industry will be very badly affected by Labours tax plans leading to job losses and the UK having to import oil and gas from elsewhere.

larkim note she didn't say investigation, just the decision to let her back into the party which would be all that's left to do based on Derbyshire's tweet. Obviously when reading that tweet at the time we didn't have that info.

The general issue though is there's not enough money to fund services already. I think the tax free allowance going up for all would be a good thing in isolation though (assuming I've read things correctly). |

Ultracat I think that's true and I also think it's the right thing to do. We can't keep supporting the extraction of oil and gas anywhere in the world, so that includes the UK and North Sea. But it's only half the story. Labour are planning to pump loads of support into the renewable energy industry. Oil and gas companies, with their expertise in offshore engineering, piplelines, infrastructure etc. would be really well placed to transition their business and employees to this new, growing industry. My opinion is that OnG companies are smart businesses and people. They'll follow the money. If there is money to be made in renewables, they'll get into renewables. That oil and gas is dying is just a fact and it's an industry that they need to get out of. G |

It makes more sense that way, although linking the tax allowance to annual pension increases still seems a bit odd. Whatever, it's just another shake of the magic money tree, which is endlessly fruitful for Tories but apparently completely bare when it comes to Labour proposals. |
