"The selections for Labour candidates needs to be more democratic and we should end NEC impositions of candidates. Local Party members should select their candidates for every election."

There doesn’t seem to be much time to go through a process of selecting candidates before the lists need to be finalized ahead of the GE.

The downside of local selections is that it ends up like the US primaries where two candidates seemingly on the same side end up slagging each other off in public.

Forgot to say re taxes (and I’ve probably said it before) is that the narrative around it needs to move away from a punishment.

I agree there. But this election is only 6 months maximum before the election had to be held.

Quite how and why the parties, particularly the Tories, who have to select a new candidate every 100 minutes, have been so caught out baffles me a little. There's going to be some whoppers in their final selections and I'm sure a lot more vetting from the world searching through social media, relevant history, than the Tories are going to do themselves.

Reform have apparently already sacked 100+ candidates this year because stuff has come to light including multiple in the same seat. They won't win a single election, but again there's going to be some interesting candidates in there. Historical statistics prove it.

Last minute candidate selection is definitely something that it makes sense for the HQ to get involved in, even though the principle of letting local party officials select is the one most would want to see adhered to. Not every vacancy that arrives for a candidate will be known long in advance I suppose, and some of the unselected candidates will still (even this election) be in unwinnable constituencies, I would expect (though could be wrong!).

I agree last minute by NEC makes sense, the party will have better vetting powers. I think the suspicion (or in some cases what is known) is that the local party has been blocked from selecting in certain areas where they'd likely have selected a more left wing candidate. Corbyn's constituency is an example as I understand it.

I've literally just seen an official in one of the last-minute Labour selections complaining about NEC imposition given their previous candidate decided not to stand last year.

There's clearly some more nuance to some of the selections.

And looking at Starmer's own words, he does at least only use the word "should".

The NEC thing is where the likes of Luke Akehurst become involved. He is a non-Jewish pro-Zionist: webelieveinisrael.org.uk

Here he is in, his own words on LabourList (starts off reasonable and descends into What-About-Hamas and defending Starmer's words on cutting off water and food, just saying he "could have been clearer")

labourlist.org

I think it very unlikely they'd vote to let Abbott back in.

I'm waiting for Luke Akehurst to be one of those selected and send left-wing Twitter into meltdown.
