They (including Braverman in this for the moment) are not that stupid to not be able to realise it. Their policies are designed to drive the small boat crossings because it helps them politically - by getting the frothing at the mouths loons who shout "net-zero immigration" left right and centre. It's their issue which allows them to drive their other Brexit agenda on wanting to leave the ECHR (this was mentioned at the time of Brexit I recall. Many ignored the threat and voted for it anyway, because neoliberal something something...) If they had a safe processing centre in Calais, it would almost stop the boats crossings overnight. That would then leave them with awkward questions about "skilled" migration routes and visas because as we know these have *increased* since Brexit, because the economy relies on it (all growth is immigration derived - GDP per capita is flat and has been for a long time). That would then leave them in a political hole, so they have somewhat manufactured the small boats crossings and the crisis in the immigration system to show that "they're doing something" and give them wedge issue. They've got nothing else. Everything in govt is in disarray. Since Brexit and 2015 gave the arsonists the keys to the government, they've all subsequently shown they're not fit to govern. (and before JDA comes in and says but Starmer not going to reverse Brexit - no he's not, but his government can come in and do some of the basic things like govern competently - which this lot patently can't. Might be a low bar, but that's where we are). |

I enjoy cynicism at the best of times, but even I can't go along with the govt policy being designed to encourage small boat crossings. I can't give you a reason why they haven't come up with a credible, humane policy which prevents them though!

Well the question is why don't the Tories want safe routes and why is Labour silent (at best currently) on it when it was policy previously (the answer is they likely see it as a wedge issue). Chris posted the video where Starmer said it's not the answer (which is wrong as it's at least part of the answer) but I hope it's not been scrapped as policy.

It sounds very much like Labour are rowing back on the safe and legal routes policy. twitter.com |

Both the Tories and the SNP attacking Starmer about his pledges. Saying that he never delivers any pledges he pledges. Made me laugh a bit as both of those parties are really renowned for doing the things they say they are going to do. Not. |

They should have already set up a counter criminal gangs task force to use all available means to id and target them. If they haven't, then they really are effing stupid. Maybe they have already, but they can't share intel with the French as Brexit's got in the way. Now that would be quite ironic. They wouldn't want to bandy that about, would they? I agree the BBC have done a better job of tracking down the gangs in recent weeks. This gov fail miserably to tackle the cause because it might mean cooperating with the EU |

Maybe because it costs loads of money and skilled officers to process, track and trace (all) immigrants - and we know how shit they are at that! Perhaps they should bring back Dildo for a second bite of the cherry? |

Conservatives are always prone to tackling symptoms - preferably in as harsh a fashion as possible as it feeds into their bigotry - rather than the underlying problem.
