Nice to see that my MP Darren Henry is not on any of them, as usual he is waiting to see who will win before putting in his support for them.

I looked at his website to see if he had any thoughts. His section called "Opinions" last had an entry in Jan 2021.

Bob!
Some of them do talk sense.

In a lengthy series of tweets, the international trade minister, Greg Hands, who has backed Rishi Sunak, said of Boris Johnson’s potential leadership bid: “People forget quickly. I don’t.

“I was with Boris late on the evening of 6th July. He offered me Northern Ireland Secretary (a position not to be thrown around lightly), if I could just show the world he could indeed form a government.

“I think he would have offered me almost anything. I refused. Indeed, as we sat there, more resignations of junior ministers, whips and PPSs were coming in.

“I told him he had to resign, as he couldn’t form a government. Doubtless others said the same. The next morning, he duly did resign.

“I have no reason to have any more confidence today that he could put together an effective government.

“Some of my colleagues think he could win a 2024 general election. But if you can’t form a workable, effective and stable government, you’ll never get to 2023, let alone 2024.

“There are many other good reasons why Boris would be the wrong choice. But being elected the leader of the largest party in parliament, but without being able to form a stable government, would be a new set of circumstances which could lead to constitutional crisis & early general election in chaotic circumstances.

“It has to be Rishi Sunak.”

Reminds me of a patter song from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta:

"I grew so rich that I was sent

by a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party's call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all!
(And he never thought of thinking for himself at all!)

I thought so little, they rewarded me,
By making me the ruler of the Queen's Navy.
(He thought so little, they rewarded he,

by making him the ruler of the Queen's Navy)"

I'm not convinced Penny Mordaunt is going to get to 100 nominations. I think it's a toss-up between a Johnson-Sunak run-off (unless Sunak throws his toys out of the pram and refuses to run against Johnson) and a Sunak coronation...

I could easily imagine a scenario is which Sunak wins the MPs run-off about 250-110, but then the Tory membership completely ignore that. Although the elderly members' lack of universal email coverage might count against Johnson...

I feel an overwhelming sense of powerlessness and frustration at this continuing unedifying spectacle....The whole lot of them stink and they deserve everything that’s coming to them.

I share your feelings here. We've been following this at home today, sharing bits from the news; alternating between shaking our heads at the latest, bewilderment and outbreaks of mirthless, semi-hysterical laughter. It's like we're in an unreality TV show with a tombola picked plot line each day.

Prospect of Johnson lasting 6 months when 250 MPs think he is shit... Not great, but of course the elderly golf club sociopaths are incapable of running that computation.

Not all the ministers who resigned in July have the moral strength to refuse a job working for him in November, but most of them will, which will leave him with the absolute festering bin juice of the party to stock his cabinet with. Again.

Anyone seen the LedByDonkeys vid on Jacob Rees Mogg. I remember mocking him on this very thread a decade or so ago and being pilloried for doing so....! Oh how times change.

Anyway much of it you will know, but one absolutely jawdropping bit about him being 27 years old and having his nanny and another member of staff holding a book up to stop him getting sunburn on the back of his neck.

twitter.com

Yeah me the dangerous left wing radical for daring to suggest this man is absolute poison. Where are you eh JRM backers? Awfully quiet.
