Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

These piss taking twats, you cannot get rid of 2 PM's and not have a GE. FFS

Rees Mogg said (I think when May took over) that when a PM stands down there should be a GE because historically one has almost always followed anyway and the mandate has gone.

These last few weeks have shown this to be never truer. Yet I guarantee they still won't do the right thing.

Next stage in this farce is the party membership getting out of their box about the MPs doing whatever they like to pick another leader.

As pointed out on BBC coverage, the leadership contest took longer than Truss' term in office.

So leadership election completed within a week - so ignoring the party members

I doubt they can do that, the Tory party official rules require an election via the members - but *only* if they are presented with more than one candidate.

So if the 1922 process results in just one candidate standing up for it, then the party members don't get a say.

I agree there should be a GE, but if I was a tory MP it's the last thing I'd call for. Turkeys, Christmas...

They're going to set the bar for nominations so high that there's either only 1 or 2 candidates on the shortlist. And if 2, one will step down during the process a la Andrea Leadsom.

I can’t think of a PM who has taken office mid-election cycle who has gone to the country within 6 months except Eden in 1955 and Johnson in 2019. If only there was a constitution.

MacMillan, Douglas-Home, Callaghan, Brown didn’t - they all waited for the next election, though in Douglas-Home was only a year out from an election. May went to the country tactically in 2017 about a year later.

Parliamentary democracy: as long as the PM can command a majority in the HoC they are legitimate.

Imagine Suella resigning because she'd breached the Ministerial Code and then asking to be PM the following day
