I don't quite understand how Keir Starmer and others can't make this stick? "Conclusion 2. Whatever the initial intent, what took place at many of these gatherings and the way in which they developed was not in line with Covid guidance at the time. Even allowing for the extraordinary pressures officials and advisers were under, the factual findings of this report illustrate some attitudes and behaviours inconsistent with that guidance. It is also clear, from the outcome of the police investigation, that a large number of individuals (83) who attended these events breached Covid regulations and therefore Covid guidance." So confirmation in this report and in the police investigation that the activities that occurred were "breached Covid regulations". So the statements in parliament by PM ("... Covid regulations were not broken...") was factually incorrect. What more is needed? G

Just because he was factually incorrect, doesn't necessarily mean he didn't lie. Now Gray is out of the way, we're into the Parliamentary inquiry; if that finds that he did know back in November last year that rules were broken and that he lied that would be a clear cut finding which he'd not be able to hide from. The Parliamentary inquiry will, assuming politics doesn't get in the way, speak more clearly than SG did I suspect.

Very little chance the Sun or Mail turn against him. I think they’re the only two mainstream papers which didn’t splash on the photos, etc, this week. If they were going to hedge position, it was this week to do it.

larks - did you mean the two negatives there? "... doesn't necessarily mean he didn't lie"? Can't quite work out if you are saying that it should be prosecutable or not?

Things like this exchange

"Invites to the event were sent out on 11 June and one day later Mr Reynolds and Mr Cain were once again discussing the implications of holding the event.

The 12 June Whatsapp exchange read:

Martin Reynolds: "[No 10 official's] leaving drinks next week - can we discuss handling!"

Lee Cain: "Yes - not sure how we want to do it but want to do something"

Martin Reynolds: "Is it safer to do a larger event indoors but with some people carrying on outside afterwards?"

Lee Cain: "I'm not sure it works at all to be honest, which would be a shame. I don't see how we can have some kind of party though"

Martin Reynolds: "So you are saying nothing for [No 10 official]?"

Lee Cain: "I think it's your decision my friend, not mind [sic]! But it obviously comes with rather substantial comms risks"

"

showing that people in his team knew that it was against rules. Again, who is responsible for their actions? Surely PM, as it's in his office and home? :-) G

Not totally surprised to discover that Downing Street staffers were regularly shitty to "the servants".

I imagine many of the younger ones are the "highly connected" sons and daughters of Tory grandees and they come from the same entitled roots as Bozo and Mogg.

SNAP POLL: 74% of Britons think that Boris Johnson knowingly lied about whether he broke lockdown rules

All Brits

He did: 74%
He did not: 13%

Con voters

Did: 51%
Did not: 29%

Lab voters
Did: 94%
Did not: 2%

Question: can a party credibly expect to win an election with a leader who is widely mistrusted, and despised as a liar and a cheat? Can a party which has crashed the economy and sent millions into anxiety, depression and penury win an election?

We shall see.

What I meant was that that Johnson said "no" there were no parties, and "but I am sure that whatever happened, the guidance was followed and the rules were followed at all times." He can only have lied if he had been told that guidance wasn't followed. If he should have known, but didn't because he was an idiot, he won't have lied.

So he may not have lied. As stupid as that sounds.

What I was hoping for was at least one email, Whatsapp from Cummings, etc etc that said "I should add, PM, that I am a little concerned that these WTF are not exactly Covid compliant". Any little snippet which definitely meant that the issue of covid compliance had been raised directly with Johnson would see him hung out to dry as a liar.

The absence of that means he can, and will, argue that he didn't knowingly lie. Which is, of course, ludicrous. But is also something he'll probably get away with.

He and his staff have debased the centre of government in a way I can't ever recall having happened before. Pissups, scuffles, puking, wine time fridays, partying until 4 in the morning. This wouldn't be acceptable in normal times, let alone in the middle of a pandemic. Most businesses I know have a total ban on alcohol consumption on the premises.
Plus, obviously, the concept of "a work event" never existed as aa exception in the Covid regs and I still can't believe the journalists haven't pulled him up on it.

^ 'Also in the programme, Anneka Rice talks about the return of Challenge Anneka for Channel 5.'

Should be re-titled, 'Challenge Sue', maybe...
