Good point made by AOC. Republicans are pro-life when they're intervening with women's bodies, but no so pro-life that they're even remotely concerned about 18 year olds getting hold of assault rifles. In fact, their answer is that everyone should be armed to stop this sort of atrocity happening. About time the second amendment got a substantial makeover. |

Their argument to "Let God decide" when it comes to abortion rights doesn't seem to resonate with them when you use the same argument in respect of their right to defend themselves and their need for guns..

I'm not sure God really comes into it for many of them. He's a convenient patsy so they don't have to think about their viewpoint (just as much as being an unthinking Labour or Tory supporter is here). It's Cultural, and also tied to the inherently more selfish viewpoint of "individual rights" given them by their short history that enshrined the right to bear arms for a point in time. Remember even the most liberal and socialist of the country's founders were involved in a battle for freedom against the Imperial yoke! They emphasis the individual over the society and don't take orders well. |

See also American foreign policy which is basically to give arms to whichever group they think is in their side at a given point in time. And then to drone strike the weddings of anyone who they think isn’t on their side. |

I actually think "individual rights" is more of the convenient patsy here than god (regarding abortion right in the USofA). There's an obvious individual whose rights to control their own body are being absolutely ignored.

Was expecting a "pile on" in here, but a bit quiet? Odd that event in PM's flat not investigated. References to staff being sick (presumably through alcohol) at one event. Official photos don't really present a "party" narrative. Bottom line, he's got away with it because the political heat was taken away by the police intervention. |
