When it first came in it was fair as the contractual bonus on offer made it a good deal and you got rewarded for the extra and quality of effort.
Now that the bonus situation has changed there is less incentive and I understand recruitment has been tougher recently as the overall package is now less competitive.
I absolutely take your point though and I guess its now down to my personal sense of wanting to do the best job that I can.

The free hours you donate do go to the bonus pot, your bosses bonus pot not yours.

We used to get a bonus at the arm's length public sector body I worked (we've just been insourced)- slightly bigger amount as a one off payment with slightly smaller amount added to base salary - wasn't dependent on extra hours just performance and achievements
