I'm not ashamed. I voted for the party that had the most policies in it's manifesto that agreed with mine in a weighted manner that had what was more important to me carrying more sway. I don't believe any of the main parties were telling the truth about their intentions but as I have no way of gauging who is more truthful, I have to go off what they put forwards that seems realistically achievable. I did that and Tories were slightly ahead so that's who I voted for. No reason for me not to do exactly the same again at the next election and vote for whoever it is that time regardless of if I think this current government are failing in several large ways or not. |

Let me ask again .. where does the £100m for the app come from? Lying about death figures? Hardly .. presenting 'hospital deaths after confirmation of Covid', yes, but they repeatedly said that's what the figure was. I'm not a great supporter of the current government, but I'd prefer it this thread didn't make it worse with vitriol and lies? If people can substantiate their words, then I'll happily apologise. Oh - and for Dave W in page 2963, an oldie, 'how do you know if a politician is lying?' A: 'Their lips are moving'. |

Any wasted money whether £1,000 or £1,000,000 or £10,000,000 in the current climate is irresponsible, but what is really tragic is the waste of time. Time = Lives lost.

um, I have to say I find the widespread attitude that all politicians are liars to be a problematic one. I think many people enter politics with very good intent and some manage to hold on to that still in a corrupting world, and to dismiss them automatically as liars does them a great disservice. It's also part of the right-wing populist game plan, as Garry Kasparov has often pointed out. The aim of the lying populists is not really to make people believe them, it's to make people doubt the existence of any kind of objective truth. |

Thanks Um for the sense check. Done a wee search. New York Times indicates £108 million "Mr. Johnson has entrusted the job largely to Serco, an outsourcing giant that was recently obliged to pay the government a hefty fine for fraud on a previous, unrelated contract. The New York Times has learned that the contact-tracing contract, awarded in a secretive procurement process, cost 108 million pounds, or about $136 million." nytimes.com Evening standard has indicated 11 million wasted so far: "Zuhlke Engineering was awarded more than £5 million across two contracts for development and support on the app." "The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) also awarded more than £4.8 million to developer VMware and its subsidiary Pivotal in three contracts for work on the creation of the app." "A number of other contracts to several other firms were also awarded for work on security testing of the application, ranging in value from £67,000 to more than £162,000." Ditched because the technology did not work on iPhone standard.co.uk publictechnology.net - says 12 million |

I would never vote Tory. You only have to look at their historic opposition to equalities legislation of all kinds to know who they care about. It isn't just about the economy and it isn't just about "what they will do for me". It's about who you think will make the country a fairer place with equal rights and shared prosperity for all. And that will never be the Tories.

And I'm afraid, Um, that the Tories could put in their manifesto that they were going to give everyone in the country a million pounds, a date with a super-model, gold plated toilets and a pony, and I wouldn't vote for them while I've got a hole in my arse, as the saying goes. They lie like a cheap watch. But I do agree that tarring all politicians with the same brush is lazy and counter-productive. So I will say that all the Tory government are lying bastards. How's that for balance. |

The trouble is, there is a bigger issue here, even if they got it to work, there is so much distrust of this lot, who would actually use it? I use the covid-19 app daily but would NEVER download the government app. Dim and Dom, May, Cameron, Clegg and Corbyn have completely destroyed my faith in anyone in Westminster looking the best interests of the inhabitants of the UK. My local MP is great, but I couldn't vote for her because of Corbyn being at the top of that tree. Sad state of affairs but I am now viewing the world from a vey narrow perspertive, what is best for those I care about most. I may have fallen into the Kasparov trap but frankly I've almost given up caring about the wider community. I used to be more altruistic but the last 15 years have largely destroyed that.

J2R - I was being flippant, as opposed to vindictive. All politicians I have met genuinely believe in what they are doing, and seem motivated by good sense rather than personal gain. Although there comes a time when power and personal authority start to impact. Run free - contracts awarded doesn’t (necessarily) mean money committed. But I repeat- I’m only chasing truthful posts, rather than hyperbole from either side. |
