Also re: the Bolton book in the US - interesting point being raised - given that they are asking for an injunction on publication on grounds of it containing classified information, that means the information in it *must* be true. One cannot have a classified lie. |

Since the first requirement for high office is that you have to be a thick narrow-minded zealot, it's hardly surprising that every policy initiative and project is a complete shambles.

From Fozzy’s politico link: Meanwhile, Brexit voters are “less likely to prepare as they don’t believe in any potential negative consequences of leaving.” Polling in January this year showed 74 percent of U.K. adults had done nothing to prepare for leaving the EU and did not plan to. They can all be lumped together with the “Football Lads Alliance”, who strangely associate themselves with the premier league in which only about a third of players are eligible to play for the “Home Nations” and a good proportion of that cohort come from BAME backgrounds. Hell and handcart.... |

jda, I don't necessarily think they're all thick narrow-minded zealots. I wish they were. I would love to think that the drive to push Britain off a cliff was down to ignorance, but I fear it might be worse, it might be knowing and deliberate. Great article in the Guardian yesterday by Rafael Behr on this subject: theguardian.com |

J2R- when you get caught out by a talented, albeit very young man, who happens to be a footballer, I don't really see how anything but "crap" can characterise the abilities of the members of the government. Can anyone see a fault here in my logic regarding the US trade deal: 1) Trump won't get it through Congress before the election as the Democrats won't approve it (no reason to, effects on Ireland etc) and little work has been done preparing it in any case. 2) Trump and gang are waiting to see the outcome of the UK/EU negotiations. If the UK gets the preferred Free Trade arrangement, Trump won't be happy as it will not favour the US as much. The US really does not need this deal. 3) If Trump is re-elected, the deal could still not pass Congress as Congress is likely to be dominated by Democrats. I may have missed something, but I cannot see Trump expanding his base to win more seats in Congress even if he does win the election. None of the polls suggest that he is gaining areas he didn't win last election. He may still win, but usually second term Presidents don't gain full control of Congress and the Senate (here is where my argument's weak point could be). 4) A Biden administration won't accept the deal after the election. He has publicly said that he would have preferred the UK to remain, there are doubts about the effect on Ireland, he has the ability to renege on it after 6 months in any case. Have I missed something? Either the government is going all-in on Trump being re-elected and hoping somehow it passes Congress, or they are playing Brexiters and hope for something substantial from the EU, using this US deal as a lever. |
