Rashford's campaign has been successful then.

bbc.co.uk

I do think it's harsh to be cynical in this case. This was someone significantly raising the profile of a worthy cause, using their own personal experience, not jumping on an already popular bangwagon.

Damning indictment that the govt of a wealthy country like ours needs to fund impoverished children throughout the summer, isn't it. I don't personally like the link to "free school meals" as FSM are a separate beast for a whole host of reasons. But in 1997 when I careened home on a sunny spring day with a Labour govt newly in power I'd never have dreamed that by 2020 we'd be living in a country where such a scheme as Rashford has advocated for would be necessary.

Utterly depressing.

Though at least well done to those within the govt (and Tory party) for piling on the pressure in response to Rashford to ensure that the PM had to back track - it doesn't strike me as an instinctively Bojo response without that sort of defeat or embarrasment looming.

What Rashford has done is brilliant and good news for those who rely on this. However, I think the greater fight should be against the system that allows a non living wage and zero hours contracts. Maybe some sportspeople/celebs holding positions of influence could lobby behind this cause?

I don't have any answers but surely from a dignity point alone it would be a better "cause" to aim for a living wage for all rather than a free meal handout?

Yay to Rashford.

Booo to the abolition of the DFID. Cummings a go-go at full speed here isn't it?

'Pupil Premium' was introduced in 2011, if my memory serves. Eligibility was receipt of free school meals. The money went to school or college to reduce attainment gaps.

The fact that this government is susceptible to popular influence is perhaps a cause for some optimism, so long as popular concern is aligned with goodness. Unfortunately there are few situations in which populism remains aligned with goodness. NHS has always been poplar, but the Brexit bus perverted that popular sympathy. Perhaps we are seeing two additional instances of popular concern aligning with goodness at the present time: popular opinion has swung at least temporarily behind BLM. Popular opinion is also behind the need to do something constructive for deprived children. The challenge is ensuring that those popular sympathies do not become distorted or perverted.

The free school meal voucher system has been fraught with problems since it was introduced a few weeks ago. I decided to stick with grocery bags for our families and was glad I did. I'm not optimistic that the families who need the vouchers will necessarily be able to spend them - there have been tales of vouchers not coming through and shops refusing to accept them. I hope I'm wrong.....

PP is allocated for learners who have "Ever6" status - i.e. have they ever in the last 6 years had eligibility for FSM. Which includes children of armed forces, those children with parents with temporary low income status, etc etc as well as those who most might consider to be "genuinely" from poor backgrounds. It's a statistics thing - on average, children who are ever6 have lower attainment rates, so additional funding is allocated. Though in truth, the PP funding was really a backdoor way to increase schools funding on a per capita basis without having to amend the national formulas. It, of course, came with obligations about how it is recorded / spent / allocated so it doesn't go into the "general" pot, and probably doesn't fit the flexibility requirements that most schools would prefer to have to be able to direct support to those, whether impoverished or not, that need the most support from the school sector. e.g. a child from a wealthy but emotionally abusive family wouldn't benefit from PP support, but a child from a family with fantastic parental support and good economic background who 5 years ago had some financial issues would get the full PP allocation directed to them.

Blunt instrument funding, with restrictive ties from the DfE. Quite typical, unfortunately, because some schools and educators in the past have not always demonstrated their ability to manage finances well.

For goodness sake will someone (anyone) in “government” actually join a few dots when you see them!

Today we have the following:

1. IDS/Mogg and others demanding a reduction in the 2m rule “so that hospitality and leisure industries can reopen”, and the same grouping demanding reopening of airports to allow travel to resume.....
2. The government confirms that we have left the EU therefore we have no intention of joining a European system designed to show tourists which destinations are open to them in each country

According to statista, 6 of the top 10 nationalities of tourists to UK are from the EU!!
