No. There is no plan. Hence "no deal"

A plan would state what would happen in situation X, and if Y happened etc.

Yet only today we have it announced that "Freedom of Movement will end on 31st Oct" - if there were a plan, it would be announced what the alternative would be. It would be announced how it was going to work, what EU citizens would need to do (remember those who are applying for settled status could only do so since March and so far they've got through only 1 out of 3million, plus EU citizens were given until the end of 2020 to apply in the first place), where the money for all the extra border staff is coming from, what other agencies need to do to tie in with them, e.g. NHS, HMRC etc, how employers are supposed to employ non-UK citizens, what the visa scheme is going to look like, how it's going to work, what forms need to be filled in.

And that's just for starters.

Instead we get: "Priti Patel will announce details in the forthcoming weeks"

Bollocks will she. It'll be a half-baked inconsistent unworkable mess with no thought put into whatsoever - basically it'll the equivalent of believing that it'll work.

And it'll lead to another Windrush style scandal, because under the govt's hostile environment rules, unless you can prove you have the right to remain (the onus is on the person), you can't be treated by the NHS, you can't open a bank account etc etc.

Here's my plan. Revoke Article 50. Have a general election. Vote out the Tories. Put Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson in the stocks and throw rotten veg at them*

*joke.

"Post-hoc rationalisation of emotional response isn’t confined to one side of the argument"

Never said it was.

Yet ask a Brexiter to explain their vote. Breaks down under any rational line of questioning.

I think it was Ian Dunt who put it rather well: "Govt by trolling". Their MO is to make a stream of announcements, mostly chumming the waters and energising their base, while not actually doing anything. And we're on to the next nonsense story in less than 24h...Trump has showed the effectiveness of this in political terms, and so long as you don't care about the country going to hell in a handcart in the meantime, that's all that counts.

The borders aren't actually going to close, any more than brexit is actually going to happen on the 31st.

Good joke RF. I know you meant bricks.

Yes, rf_fozzy, that's about right. I mentioned the other day on here about my bafflement that the hard core Brexiter politicians constantly come out with stuff they know is nonsense, just for the PR, without actually appearing to have any real, workable plans behind the scenes. I can't decide whether what we are seeing here is the most ideologically hard right government of my lifetime with some kind of sinister plan, or just the most bunglingly incompetent and grossly irresponsible one. We are about to have the most colossal upheaval in this country since the Second World War, and nobody seems to be bothered with anything other than soundbites.

Looks like BJ has upped the ante by ending free movement on 31st October.

I wonder if this will get the EU to move on reopening discussions re the withdrawal agreement?

That's the default no deal position surely? Nothing changes.

Apart from he's already pretty much telegraphed that one, "we're going make you blink on no deal first"... Funnily enough the EU won't yield. I think they are entirely pissed off with our juvenile antics.

Meanwhile in other news, the residents of NI want the backstop.

But hey let's get all colonial with them, "WE English know what is better for you, than you dumb johnny foreigner".

That's the original proposed backstop, one the DUP would hate. The May one was UK wide in a failed attempt to avoid such issues.

BJ has made a cock of himself (again) by promising something completely nonsensical and undeliverable.

And what a lovely move that is, Stander. Creating more turmoil for about 3 million EU citizens here. Not to mention the 1.5 million UK citizens living in the EU.

Settled status is, even by Brexit standards, an appalling mess. It pretty much only guarantees that we take tax revenue off EU citizens here. There are no guarantees of their rights and every time they get a new passport or change address, they have to reapply.

Just as an example, let's say a woman from an EU country has a child, goes on maternity leave. She will really struggle to satisfy the criteria.

I think JDA and Fellrunning have both made salient points on this:

a) We leave. Trade talks, EU will demand guarantees for EU citizens and a backstop (not to mention US Congress) square one

b) We lose scientists, experts etc. In return we get a load of pensioners back from EU countries.

So, no, he isn't upping the ante. He is merely creating another way to blame the EU for our decision to damage ourselves.

This is the only planning that is going on.
