I'm finding FV50 to be the most competitive category since joining if last year. I have sometimes missed out on a prize as an FV50 when if I'd have been an FV35 I'd have been 1st in category

The only time I've ever finished first M-anything was at the Santa Run last year. V small field, and the sensible santas all stayed home, since it was peeing with rain and freezing cold!

I once came 4th in the veterans and asked if I could be second in the 'male' instead. I was refused.

On a flat fast 5k course I'm capable of going under 19 (and hope to keep that level for a few years yet) but that's not really what I would call an impressive speed.
Round here MV40 (and MV45 when listed) is still really tough but MV50 is a different kettle of fish. I've jumped from a medium-fast finisher to regular top 3 (including winner!) in a wide range of events. Eg last weekend I was close 2nd MV50 in a small local fell race, whereas 12 MV40s beat me by up to 5 mins.

Yes. I reckon the 50 mark sees some sort of dropping away. I never got anywhere in my 40s but in 6 races this year I have been top 3 in 4 and 5th and 9th in the others. The 9th was the best oddly enough. Trafford 10k everyone goes there.

I was banking on getting old as being my only chance to win something until a clubmate pointed out that the rest of them were getting old at the same rate and 'they'd still be faster than me!' Cheeky

That's sort of true cyclops but they tend to get injured and disillusioned or give up for other reasons. If you stay healthy and enthusiastic then climbing the ranks seems a likely outcome.

I used to aspire to being a nonagenarian world record holder, but having seen there are already nonagenarian who are faster than I am now it's not looking hopeful, even in 35 years time!

I do lots of calculations through races and parkruns.
Although am crocked after a race and have not run (couple of mini-jogs) in eleven days. Little of anything physical in fact. May try a jog tomorrow.
