the super vets classes are always loaded with speed merchants; as our club coach said to me "the mediocre among us tend to retire by the time they get to 50, the good uns just carry on 'till they get carried off in a box"

The one week I run Whittlesey parkrun.... a bloody 50+ speedster turns up and finishes first. Any other week (my 7th place) would have been first MV50-54.

Not sure I agree with that macca, it seems to me that the proper runners generally retire (wear out) in their 30s leaving the vet categories to the decidedly amateur.

Amateur, last time I looked at my local a 45-49 chap ran 16.48! Might be amateur where you run.
I sometimes manage to get in the top 3 in 55-59, last time I pitched up with 22 (ok not flat out) I was 7th in my cat.
