I wonder what skipping rhymes are thought to be relevant now--and a lot of teachers would not know the ones from the past (and why would they?!) and I suppose introduce new ones. When I was a kid it irked me when my parents went on about the things they did, the games they played when they were kids. They were the "used to" generation and annoyingly that's a trap I've fallen into on occasion! Everything changes and the generations below me (I'm nearly 70) will be nostalgic about their games (electronic!), music etc that they loved. Nevertheless it's nice to remember amongst those who remember the same things...but the words "used to" are "arghhh" words to me..much the same as when we can go on about some of the running we "used to" do!! (The older I get the better I was!). |

Music is an interesting one - my daughter - 18 - much prefers my music to more modern offerings and if I can't find a CD's it's because she's filched it. My parents never really listened to music, if they had I would have died rather than say I liked anything of theirs. The age gap between myself and my children seems much smaller than the gap between myself and My parents was |

Sigh
In an attempt to speed my 10-y-o through getting ready yesterday, from out of nowhere I said to her: "Izzy Wizzy, let's get busy!" I could not remember which show this was from, and had to Google it to (re-)discover it was the Sooty Show.

My son, now 31, got into the 70s music I enjoyed, Slade, T Rex, Alice Cooper etc, in such a big way that he now has every CD Alice Cooper ever made! My daughter, 27, has absolutely no interest in my music! |

Generally, my children have resisted my subtle attempts to expose them to great music, with the exception of Talking Heads, which has become ingrained in their lives.

Mrs P - a year older then me - claims that everything I listen to sounds ‘dated’.

Actually that’s always a bit of a risk with ELO when Mr Blue Sky comes on.

I think that we are all in what you could broadly call the "pop and rock" generations: rock and roll really was a seismic shift in popular music, and expanded to be so broad and ubiquitous that it is really unusual for people to be completely outside it now. Most of us probably straddle shifts from guitar based to electronic to "dance" (house/rave/techno/whatever). Where I have completely parted, from the mainstream is autotune. I fucking loathe it. Meaning that contemporary chart pop/dance is pretty much completely unlistenable to be. Still, there is always the vast amounts of everything else, and sixty years of "old stuff". I was listening to this the other day in the car, sun out, windows down, saying "kids today, their tunes are rubbish, they are not bangin' like these" mixcloud.com Dave Clarke from 1995, a mix which would be twice as old as a current sixteen years old and in relative terms would have been metal/new wave/electronic listening me listening to some early Beatles instead (or perhaps, Dave Clark). |
