That sounds gorgeous, Canute. It was still dull and windy up in the north of the county yesterday. Today was better.

Great to have lost that north east wind!
Liked your write up Canute...yeah..running in proper snow is wonderful; this morning though along my nearby trails it had turned to slush and the brief winter wonderland was gone! So I only ran a mile!
It is important as you say to make sure that you are equipped to deal with the weather-- a number of people recently were still running in vests and shorts despite minus Celsius figures and wind chill on top of that! Maybe getting warm when running stops that penetration of cold but...in the event of an injury or some other reason to stop running it's important to make sure that one is safe from the cold.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I'm with you steve45. I rarely have more than shorts on but layer up the top half and always take gloves hat and buff.

We missed the snow but I found some this morning 25 miles east for a nice easy run in the woods (the dog loved it!). Then ran the first race of 2018 and had a nice sprint finish with a fellow supervet for what we both thought was age group third. Lost out on that one but it turned out that a visiting V50 was in the field and joined two 'well ken't faces' ahead of us. We don't get two many unfamiliar runners in the far north!

I've seen a few people running in shorts. Through the snow.

All I've done is walking. Love Canute's accounts (apart from the wheezing); love the idea of running on snow, as I do the idea of fell running, but not risking my knee on such uneven surfaces.

It's interesting, a lot of OW swimmers I know (and see in the sea throughout the winter) prefer to swim in their costumes, the only concession to the low temperatures being neoprene gloves and boots. I guess there must be some physiological reason why, if your extremities are 'warm', you can cope with lower temperatures.

Personally I am not one of those people. I found swimming in 4*C really painful on my feet and hands, so my gloves and boots were a necessity - as was my wetsuit!!

Just the thought of swimming in cold water is horrible to me.

It doesn't even have to be cold water for me, 57.5!

I saw a bit of the London Half Marathon yesterday and noted that most men ( elites) were well wrapped up at least until they were a few miles in...but Lily Partridge who came second in the women's race may as well have been running naked. The smallest of briefs/shorts, a bare mid riff and that was it! I've seen young women wearing more on the beach in the summer! I guess some people can just tolerate the cold more than others but it did look silly.

I wonder whether fretting about people being out in a few little wisps of clothing is a getting-old thing. My mother does it a lot. I like to think I'm still young enough to carry off doing it ironically.

It is an interesting observation though, the fashion for skimpy kit for women while men seem not to feel the need to expose their midriffs. The first time I thought about this was watching some cross-country races from a freezing cold Edinburgh on TV a year or two back. The women wore gloves (mostly) and knee length socks (mostly), tiny shorts and crop tops (almost without exception.). The men largely wore no or perhaps ankle socks, 'normal' shorts and vests. Do the sexes experience heat and cold differently? There's presumably a reason why so many women have adopted the bare midriff costume yet men haven't?
