Since my stressed out days of teaching I have meditated on and off but totally lost the flow and not meditated for ages.
My recent athletic failure has shown that I need to get onto of my emotions and manage my pre-race anxiety as well as become more mindful in my eating to enable me to lose weight.
By overcoming my anxiety (and losing weight) I will be able to train and finish the event I recently DNF'd at.
I have given myself plenty of time to become the athlete I need to be. I've proved I can do the physical training but I need to do the mental training too.
I've re-signed up for Headspace as a starter and will be reading and learning from scratch again.
So I thought I would start a thread to share experiences and encourage each other - I hope others will join me.

Hi Pix, this is something I really need to work on too but despite trying I rarely find the inclination to sit still and breathe. Any tips and supporting each other would be appreciated.

this is exactly why I started this! When teaching it was essential to take those few minutes

Fab I really need to learn to take some time to switch off. I used to have headspace but didn’t get on with it not sure if you need the paid version to get more options? I’ll download it again.

I use the meditation sessions on the Calm app. Short but effective.

I use the Headspace app to help with my anxiety and depression, and just to help me relax. It's not the cheapest option but it has a big range of different courses and themes, and I find it very helpful. There is a selection of exercise based mediations on there too.

I use Insight Timer & have a consistent, unbroken practice of over 3 years but have been meditating for 20 years. I think GlennR has a longer continuous practice on headspace. My main practice is 30 minutes mindful/breathing/zazen/whatever you want to call it, seated in the evening, with 3 minute refreshers spread through the day. I’ll occasionally do walking meditation and guided meditations. Meditation is simple but deceptively difficult to do correctly without a guide or teacher, especially in the early days of practice. Things can go wrong, it’s rare but possible. After I’d been meditating 15 years in various Buddhist practices I did the 8 week secular Mindfulness course. It taught me lots, regrounded and improved my practice significantly. Apps are a wonderful source and great support to meditation but they’re no substitute for an experienced teacher.

I have a subscription to Calm through work and have recently started doing their Daily Calm sessions. Not every day yet but that's the aim. 10 minutes is perfect for after my at home yoga session.
I had a long period years ago of doing Headspace every day. On the bus Not ideal but it worked for me at the time.
