You don't get one for taking part, you get one for finishing. It's nothing to most of us here but a big achievement to some and worth marking. I like them as a memento and keepsake.

I have a load of jangly medals on a hook behind the door in this very room. ('the study' - Ha. 'Room where all the crap gets dumped more like')
I really can't be arsed with them.
But I hate crap t-shirts more. I had too many shit, ill-fitting, cotton t-shirts so they got donated en-masse to the charity clothes bank. There's probably someone in Bangladesh wearing a vomit yellow Rothwell 10K (featuring a rampant cartoon wild boar) wishing he's picked something from a different box.

Weirdly my husband has exactly the same, McGoohan; jangly medals on back door of the "study". I prefer useful stuff - had a towel, fleece buff, beanie, long sleeve tech tshirt... Mugs are good, but we have loads of them now and have had to have a cull.

I love the medals I have received from completing marathons. To me they designate a moment of achievement. I also have a few medals from Half marathons that I'm proud of. Freckleton Half seems to give out a different memento every year - the umbrella they gave me a few years ago on a scorching hot day is still going strong.
I like a good tech-t - so long as it is well designed and not just covered in sponsorship adverts.
Whilst I'm not fussed about any memento for less than a half, I know that many people are proud to receive one for any race...

The Tadworth 10 two years ago (which Lalli also ran) had a winter buff - best souvenir ever!

I do like medals for a mara or a PB. Sad as it is, I feels bit miffed on those ocassions if there's nothing or something tacky.

Coniston coasters are useful. Nice bit of slate for 14 miles of great views and company at this annual event.

Give me a cup of water and I am happy. LDWA have the right idea, forget your medal but here is a 3 course dinner at the finish.
