The GPS firmware might be missing, which would make it just record distance from the accelerometer. Go into the menu > settings >system > about then scroll down with the down arrow key until you see GPS Version. It should be 3.00. If it's 0.00, the firmware is missing.

GPS version is 3.00, and worryingly EPO:Current!! Wonder if it had just got itself in a loop - it was a bit laggy on the menus. May all be fixed by the upgrade and restart. We'll see

also worth checking the memory isn't full. If it is Garmins (generally) keep the running totals for the counters but drop all the coordinate data, so it will report accurately for time/distance/etc but have no coordinates in the .fit file.

Thanks flanker, I'll give that a try. Surprised it didn't give a warning if the storage is full, but looking it up the 3 only has 23mb to play with. It has all activities since April on it, so that could be the cause. Didn;t they used to be deleted once transferred, or have I tampered a setting somewhere and forgotten?

I thought that once the memory was full that it started to drop the oldest data so it could keep recording full data from the latest activity ??

It may vary by device, and some of the older watches work differently, but from both the Fenix3 and the FR230 manual : "When the device memory is full, your oldest data is overwritten"

That would explain why I've never had to clear mine down then. Hadn't thought about it until I posted the above
In that case I'd guess it's using accelerometer or footpod to measure distance rather than GPS. Does it report a valid GPS signal when you activate an app?

It did indicate it had gps lock. I'm surprised the accelerometer would produce any elevation data, or was this from the barometer? I think i answered my own question there.. All fixed now anyway, have a plot from todays bimble. Not sure if it was the completed update, or from clearing the activities which fixed it though.
Thanks for the help

OK, I've just done an update and the stupid thing is now stuck on the Garmin logo. Turning it off and on again doesn't work (have tried this several times)
Is the only answer to this a hard reset?
