The club in Sidmouth has a mandatory induction course, whereby you do some land-based stuff and then have up to three taster rows. That seems very sound for both the would-be rower and the club. The difficulty for me is I've been tempted a bit late in the season as they recommend doing the induction course between April and September, and for various reasons I don't have enough spare weekends between now and September.
