You can use them next year assuming they've started rotting. One plot holder mows his to chop them up and just puts them straight in the soil when he turns over before winter. Apparently it helps keep it less compacted.

Hmmmm
So I could go get a load of leaves
Stick them in the lawn
Mow it and empty into a bag to leave?

I do have space I could leave in a pile but it’s not onto bare ground is that ok?

I don’t have many trees in my garden and none in the front of the house, but we accumulate a lot (sometimes several inches deep) of leaves which blow in from the surrounding area.

I have a leaf sucker/blower that I collect leaves with. It also chops the leaves, so enables a quicker break down when bagged up.

Monty Don puts leaves on his lawn and then shreds them with a mower before bagging them.

I just let the fallen leaves lie in my garden and the worms seem to manage to deal with them. Every year I plan and fail to go up the road with some bags and a shovel and get the leaves for making leaf mould before the council hoover comes along for them.

I made leaf mold from grass clippings and chopped up leaves stored in old (cotton ex grandma's) pillow cases. That worked quite well.

these days the grass/leaves mowing mix just goes in the dalek

We have loads of trees so lots of leaves. I usually sweep them off the tiny lawn and into the beds. The birds and animals love the leaf litter for holding little bugs to eat over winter.

We do bag some and then dry them for brown matter for the compost heap, seems to break down over winter and spring very well.
