On a similar level, let's say I wanted to run New York City, possibly in 2017, maybe as part of a package. I'm conscious that it's a dear do.

Assuming that I can put money away for a few months or so, what sort of budget do I want to be setting aside for the whole shebang: flights, accommodation, entry, and the like?

Yes, those are the sort of figures I was thinking about. Maybe don't need to be fully escorted - I know Manhattan a bit and would want to mainly fend for myself.

I fancy San Francisco at some time & that's a reasonable price for a US marathon Matt - the cheap ones are $100 (the equivalent of the scandalous Brighton here ;) )

I took an escorted tour package to Boston with Traviss but we buggered off sharpish rented a car drove to Connecticut & ran a bloody tough trail 50k setting ourselves up for shocking times in the blistering heat 2 days later, it's all about taking the package to get the places).

I personally prefer to enter the ballot and hope for the best. If I get lucky, fine. If not, there are other options around the world. Don't think any city marathon is worth paying up to £2k to enter even if it does have some prestige etc. (Cheaper with your own flights and hotels if you do things correctly).

I'm looking at the Clam Chowdah Challenge in Falmouth nr. Boston / Cape Cod. Meant to do it a few years ago but the hurricane hit the NY / Eastern seaboard area so didn't get the chance. After that got into NY and/or ran the Marine Corps in Washington DC etc. in subsequent years so didn't want too many close together / they clashed.

Want to do Vancouver but that's too close to some UK ultras.
May do Big Sur next year depending on when that is.

I've just got back from running in New England it's a lovely part of the world.

Is Big Sur not now a ballot too ? usually a 13 days after Boston but sometimes 6 days after the Boston / Big Sur challenge is a pretty big deal in the US.

Big Sur introduced a ballot two years ago. 4 separate ballots for 500 or so places each time. System overheated and they re-ran as a large 'job lot' ballot in one go. Last year even more complex, various allocations to repeat runners, locals, Boston2BigSur entries and so on. And then there are always charity slots. Whatever your way in this is worth the effort (and, inevitably, cash...).
