I think Froome is aiming at the stage win, he said how it was an iconic stage, he'll be thinking like he did at Ventoux two years ago.

I do wonder a little if Sky got blown apart yesterday because they were saving a bit of energy for today? (Or that they dropped back more one than usual once they faded)

If Sky gambled like that yesterday it paid off. They didn't lose much and may have better legs than Movistar (who had 3 in the GMJ) for today when it really matters.

Froome needs to be isolated before a big attack goes, otherwise the Sky train can just limit his losses, while the attacker burns himself out on his own out front.

Hence Valverde goes for it up the Croix De Fer and hopefully takes Quintana with him, maybe Froome too, but not G, Porte,, Poels or Roche etc.

Unless Valverde is more concerned with securing his podium placing and just watches Contador waiting for him to give it some. Who knows?

It's harder to do this today, Sky only have 2 mountains to cover and Col de la Croix Fer despite being a monstrous HC, just isn't Galibier. Yesterday they practically started on a Cat 1 climb which saw a lot of early attacks and some silly covering from Sky (in particular Porte).

Valverde is definitely defending his podium position, otherwise there's no reason for Nibali and Contador, and those below him to be chased when they attack. If anything, you let them attack, get a gap, then maybe attack to join them and hope for collaboration. Sky are as guilty of this as Movistar.

A couple of days ago Nibali wanted to join Contador in an attack, but was chased down.

Chris - It's a short stage though and the last mountain stage so riders can go to the limit as tomorrow is a procession for GC. This could benefit or hinder Sky in keeping the race together.

Agree, but Sky will go to the limit too, they can burn off most of their riders "defending" on this, I think it will be harder to isolate Froome. Geraint might well be back on form after yesterday's understandable jour sans. And just maybe he was told after he was dropped to ease up and conserve for today.

Also Galibier causes "oxygen" problems because of the altitude, Peraud in this month's Rouleur says he's "scared" of the mountain because he is affected a lot by altitude.
