Very interesting, although I don't get his point about the fact that Contador rode the Giro and so was tired and all the others were fresh. Rather than saying that all the others should have rode the Giro, is not the simpler solution to say that Contador shouldn't?

Also some stupid stuff.

"the top riders need to compete against each other in the biggest races to make racing fair. Alberto started the Tour de France tired after winning the Giro d’Italia, while everyone else was fresh. If Froome, Quintana, Contador and Nibali had done the Giro d’Italia, then this would have been a very different and much better Tour de France."

You have a choice which races you do. It is fair that everyone gets to choose. Contador did what he wanted, and that meant he turned up to the Tour less than fresh.

Would it have been a better Tour de France if the big 4 turned up shattered? I doubt it! It would have been a substandard slugfest.

He really doesn't like Sagan does he. More sly digs about him not winning a stage.

Sky are dominant because someone has committed finance long-term so they can plan long-term. Good for them!

I wondered about that, reading another blog on the site written 3 days before the tour, he seems to be even more annoyed about it. Isn't that why they have quite big teams, so they can vary it? I mean even folk on Fetch have target races and know they can't do loads of events back to back and perform well.

I also don't get his his point about Sky. He says its not the money but the long-term planning as though it was a bad thing. I would have thought thats what most teams would want to aim for rather than short-termism over a season? I appreciate not everyone has sponsors that will do that but surely the aim would be to use Sky as an example to try to persuade them that long-term is the way to go?

I like Sagan but I can imagine he'd be a bit of a nightmare to manage.

What he wants is all the top riders at all the big races. That won't happen if the other contenders don't do it.

Personally I have no issue with everyone choosing their own schedule, but it does make the Giro and Vuelta less marketable.

Re Sky, it's not a criticism, he's talking about the funding model of cycling. If you look at what is happening with teams, then you can see he is right that it's not sustainable. Sky are the lucky ones. This isn't a sudden thing, he's been talking about the way teams are funded for a while, Velon is one of the ways the teams are trying to get a stronger foothold in the sport. And Sky, or at least DB, agree with a lot of what he says in this regard.

Cycling teams are funded by sponsorship, sponsors in the main don't care another long term and are in it just for exposure, so teams end up chasing sponsorship to survive every year.

What Tinkov wants is more revenue sharing between races, UCI and teams. There's also the idea of franchises so that teams are more stable.

I'm interested to know who Sky are supposedly signing, as alluded to in that article...

Anyone know the rumours. Wiggins has obviously already left and Porte is going to BMC apparently, so that must leave a huge gap in their finances for new riders (although I expect Thomas is worth a bit more after the past 3 weeks!)
