Been using a garmin gps map 60, it was the top of the line at the time but got it 100 quid cheaper on ebay, theres been a few newer models since so should be pretty reasonable now. Its got colour topo maps

Does give you map to work from, but it isn't OS. Very reliable, and you can use 'normal' batteries, so it cn just be topped up on the go. Maos are not cheap though.
