LindsD - depends on the event and how tough your strength sessions are. For a marathon I would drop to lighter weights say 2 weeks before and I wouldn't do a glutes/legs session the week before. Can still do a few body weight exercises but more to keep mobility rather than a work out. |

It's a 25k and my weights are light. Only 12-14kg.

Fragile Do Not Bend
It’s never occurred to me to taper my strength training before a race before but last year I was only doing one strength session a week. I went to a couple of those Women’s Weightlifting Workshops that PureGym were running last week and I’m feeling a lot more comfortable about using the barbells now. I’m happy with my form from doing kettlebells but the lifting equipment in the gym flummoxed me and I felt a bit self conscious about it. |

LindsD - I would suggest you follow similar to my marathon taper. It's not so much what weight you're lifting but if it gives you tired muscles on the following days. Definitely avoid leg stuff the final week so your muscles are fresh. FDNB - those workshops sound great. |

They were very useful, PureGym was doing them last week because of International Women’s Day.

I went to them as well. I now feel more confident about using the correct weights and techniques . I’m going to make my Friday morning my strength work with the free weights.

LindsD I completely agree with Shades. It's having nice fresh legs (and the rest!) that counts. Exactly the same for my events - always advised not to have weights sessions before track meets. In fact the whole of the track season focuses on lighter weights and fewer sessions. But I also agree to make sure everything is functioning nicely - so mobility work (and not too tough yoga I guess) will be good next week. Don't even do tough abs - as we know they can feel quite sore after a good workout. |

When you do weights (indeed many types of exercise), you create micro-tears in the muscle fibres. So it's very sensible to avoid weights a week or so before an event to allow those tears to repair. Those micro-tears also occur when running which is one reason why we taper so we're fresh before a race. Good luck with your race LindsD!
