They sound like it to me RA - V stitch is two long stitches (eg treble) and a connecting chain worked into one stitch on the previous row (so the two long stitches look like a V). "Granny" I've always thought of as a catch-all term for three trebles followed by chains to create the classic granny square.

Mmm I'm far too much of a beginner (in fact short of managing how to do a chain, I doubt I can even call myself a beginner) to be able to tell the difference from that comment (where's the shame faced smile :-o)
