Yes you can HRM with zigzag. You may also have a stretch stitch which goes back and forth a few times, so you get a straight line with stretch. You need to be a bit careful not to stretch the fabric as you stitch so practise with the offcut of you have enough.
TBH for leggings I'd be tempted to handsew and just stretch the fabric every few stitches to make sure it's not too tight.

Its not great. Corners are terrible and the sides not straight but you can't argue it's homemade!!
Helen I started at the weekend did the patchwork but then and the rest the last 3 afternoons and this morning.
So stressful back to knitting!!
If I try again it will be smaller and I'll look at the "quilt as you go" idea too
