Didn't see this mentioned already - though surely I can't be the first? theguardian.com Clearly states 13 weeks of his prison sentence was for the fraudulent use of a dropped number - he didn't even steal it. For all that I wouldn't condone such behaviour, it does seem a touch on the harsh side to me. |

That's just ridiculous. 'the seriousness of the offences' could only be dealt with by a prison sentence? BULLsh. |

I have to agree with jda and Raemond here. Although maybe if the guy really is homeless the magistrate is trying to do him some kind of a favour?!

I seriously doubt the accuracy of that report. He was also charged with more serious thefts.

Yeah I certainly have some doubts but multiple different media outlets have said the exact same thing though. Though maybe just copying the same syndicated report....

Homeless and had had suffered a mental health crisis shortly before the marathon. So of course prison will do him a world of good... I despair sometimes. |

Does it set the precedent that anyone found cheating (missing bits, using the tube etc) should also be jailed? Seems way over the top - and I'm surprised anyone (police, marathon?) even bothered to prosecute. Don't they have enough to do? Surely the press coverage once found out was enough? |

I saw the story via Fast running yesterday and think it is absolutely ridiculous.

He got 13 weeks for the marathon 'fraud' and 3 weeks for the unrelated thefts ... I'd have thought an appropriate response would have been a homeless charity place for 2019 (esp if he joined at mile 12 as claimed & completed on no training or running kit?) |

I seem to remember that he also stole a houseboat and tried to repaint it to disguise it? Perhaps they didn't have enough evidence to convict on that and so decided to throw the book at him on this?
